Gems of Innovation: Joseph Becker's Super Insulated Light Earth wall

Joseph Becker has won code approval for projects using strawbale, straw-clay insulation and “open diffusion” wall systems. Joseph’s latest approved project is a Super Insulated Light Earth wall system with traditional 2x6 stud walls, cavities filled with “light earth” clay-straw insulation, with rigid cork insulation on the outside.

"Light earth" straw clay wall insulation by Joseph Becker

Gems of Innovation: Joseph Becker of Ion EcoBuilding is co-founder of the Guild’s Code Innovation Database, a champion Innovator who builds homes from natural earthen materials. He’s won code approval for projects using strawbale, straw-clay insulation and “open diffusion” wall systems. To help make his proven yet unconventional methods more accessible and familiar for builders, Joseph’s latest approved project is a Super Insulated Light Earth wall system with traditional 2x6 stud walls, cavities filled with “light earth” clay-straw insulation, and 3 inches of rigid natural cork insulation on the outside to create a highly-insulated and airtight wall assembly. The real innovation though is the plywood shear wall that gives strength and yet can still “breathe” to release moisture as it was designed. To find out the secret behind his prototype, you’ll have to wait ‘til we publish Joseph’s next case study in 2016. Please support our campaign on Crowdrise so we’ll have the funding to do it!!!
