Seeds of Innovation Grow to Make a Difference

I’m always amazed at the power of seeds, laying dormant through the winter, then when the conditions are right, pushing up through the soil to express the full potential of knowledge hidden within. 2016 was a groundbreaking year for the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild. Our Code Innovations Database became fertile ground for green building innovators to transform the very ground of our built environment into a lush explosion of potential. We planted many new seeds with two dozen new case studies, about the same number of blog posts, and many hundreds of people inspired by presentations given by me and EcoBuilding leaders across the region.

The seeds of success were planted last December, with a successful community funding campaign that helped us win major grants from the Bullitt Foundation and Edwards Mother Earth Foundation.  We now have more than $100,000 to grow this resource and expand our vision and impact.

This year, we planted many new seeds with two dozen new case studies, about the same number of blog posts, many hundreds of people inspired by presentations given by me and EcoBuilding leaders across the region.  We are part of a movement driving high-performance solutions that save energy and money, slow carbon emissions, and improve health in our homes and workplaces. This movement won’t be stopped by policy reversals in Washington DC, because it is growing out of the ground and the communities where we live.

Last month we held a “brain-trust” symposium of eminent leaders in energy and water innovations - “Moving the Needle with Code Innovations” - to prepare and position the Guild to take a greater leadership role with our members and a cross-sector partnership of like-minded organizations and municipalities.  In 2017 we’ll bring forth a new focus on advocacy, ready to use the Database to expand our impact and accelerate adoption of high-performance green building innovations beyond our leading Cities to our region as a whole.

  • We’ll seek formal partnerships with organizations and jurisdictions to make it easier to build green
  • We’ll publish new “Policy Profiles” highlighting adopted codes, incentives and policies that can evolve and eventually transform the building regulatory system
  • We’ll bring our research and a coordinated message to decision makers hungry for positive practical solutions.

Are you ready to join in and make a difference? We have a powerful new tool and the resources to make it grow.

I want to take this opportunity to Thank the Guild Board of Directors for their vision and fierce determination to create a positive future.  I want to express my deep gratitude for everyone who has contributed time knowledge and big piles of money to fertilize the soil where we plant the seeds of innovation.

If you feel inspired to help us continue this work, please Donate to the Database, join our team, and contribute what you know.  For now here’s a few more seeds (latest innovative case studies):
