The adoption of water reuse and conservation systems, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and composting toilets have all been slowed by regulatory barriers. Legislation is underway now to break permitting barriers and make them more accessible. Come hear from Recode experts and local practitioners how and why these systems can help you save water, capture nutrients and reduce your carbon footprint.

A team of local experts will also share their experience with installing and/or living with their systems. Come hear about the "hows" and "whys" of water reuse systems and their potential to provide a local source of nutrients (e.g. urine diversion) and reduce carbon footprints, too.

Pat Lando, Recode Executive Director

Pat brings 24 years experience as a practicing landscape architect and green infrastructure consultant to his role with Recode. He has been finding permit pathways for numerous water reuse projects from residential to campus scale. Pat designed and installed the first legal graywater system in Oregon in 2009. He served on Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s graywater advisory committee that recommended a framework for Oregon’s current code.

Maria Cahill, Recode Program Manager:

As a civil engineering designer, Maria has collaborated with interdisciplinary teams to implement sustainable water systems for over 20 years. As a consultant, Maria helped public and private clients create healthy communities and meet water quality regulations. Maria’s work at NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service and Oregon Department of Environmental Quality rounded out her understanding of permitting from both the “regulator” and “regulated” perspectives.
