Concurrent Break Out Sessions:
Four interactive sessions designed to engage participants in discussing strategies and opportunities that yield positive growth in the Northwest for FSC products and companies. Each session led by an FSC staff member who will also provide updates on related FSC activities.

• Forestland owners and managers meet to discuss FSC, revised standards, and new opportunities and strategies designed to increase sales. (Lead: Gary Dodge)
• Businesses will discuss strategies to strengthen the FSC supply chain, new opportunities to support COC certification and updates on the latest label requirements. (Lead: Emily Crumley)
• Conservation, environmental and community economic development organizations will share plans to grow FSC certification in the Northwest and identify opportunities for coordinated strategies to maximize impact. (Lead: Diane Moody)
• Retailers, printers, professional service and others directly engaging end consumers will discuss customer relations, communications and sales strategies to increase brand value related to FSC. (Lead: Corey Brinkema)

President’s Reception and Award Ceremony:
A networking event to celebrate the growth of the FSC marketplace and opportunities still ahead.

Two awards for outstanding performance will be given to a business and NGO that have demonstrated extraordinary efforts to sustain our forests and expand the market for FSC-certified products.

This reception includes a no-host bar.

Earthen Finishes for Home and Business

with Christopher Gerber, local artist.

This 2-part hands-on workshop will inspire and teach participants, enabling them to transform normal living rooms and bedrooms into places of tranquility and natural beauty. Participants will learn the health and environmental benefits of using natural clay plasters, be instructed in several troweling techniques and leave knowing guidelines from prep work to finish.

We’ll apply earthen plaster designed and mixed by local artisan Joseph Becker to the EcoHouse main office / meeting space ceiling and walls.

Cost $50 each day (10% discount for Guild Members and Students)

Day 1:  Saturday November 12:  Prep work and Ceiling Treatment

Day 2:  Sunday November 13:   Wall Treatment and Finishing

The goal for this class is to help you, the homeowner, build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) that will augment your property, maximize your space, and add flexibility to your life. This class will help you understand the essential elements of the ADU process from start to finish, which will result in a more beautiful space and will save you time and money.

The process of building an ADU can be complex, overwhelming and expensive. I am not a general contractor or an architect trying to sell you my services. I am a homeowner and environmental professional with a passion for ADUs and a lot of practical information to share about them.

You'll Walk Away from the Class Understanding...

• The design, permitting, and building process
• Relevant green building approaches and cerfications
• Financing, rebates, incentives, cost-saving design/build measures
• Resources, references and contacts to help you design and build your ADU

You'll be able to ask questions of me and other attendees, and network with other local homeowners who are considering building an ADU. Time permitting, we will tour one or two nearby ADUs.

Logistics

• The course cost is $95.
• If the fee is an issue for you, you can work-trade 8 hours. Please contact me by email if you want to do a work-trade.
• The class will be hosted in inner NE PDX at an ADU.  Address provided with registration.
• The course will go from 9am to 5pm with a lunch break. The class is going to be a fast-paced course that will cover lots of material. Be prepared with questions and be ready to take notes. I will have some handouts.

Instructor Qualifications

I am not a general contractor nor an architect trying to sell my services to you. I am a homeowner and environmental professional with a passion for ADUs and a lot of practical information to share about them

• Built a new construction ADU in NE Portland; completed in September 2011
• Extensive teaching and presentation experience for a range of professional audiences while working at the US Environmental Protection Agency
• Masters in Design and the Environment from the Harvard Graduate School of Design
• Sustainable Home Professional certification from the Earth Advantage Institute

Whidbey Island Beaming Bioneers — a local, self-organized Bioneers event- features live video keynotes from the 22nd annual Bioneers Conference in San Rafael, California along with local speakers focusing on regional, national, and international issues. This premiere gathering brings together people passionate about making a difference and serves as an incubator for change.

Course Covers
Basic home energy systems, characteristics & conservation (quickly). The solar resource, solar gain, site assessment & feasibility. The emphasis is on practical passive design issues including; system types, characteristics, sizing, heat storage, construction details, efficiencies & costs. PV (solar electric), solar hot water and incentives are also covered. Green building materials and systems are discussed throughout.
