European Building Techniques. German Green: Light Years Ahead by Sage K. Saskill and Cross Laminated Timber and Brettstapel (Swiss Framing Techniques) by Michael Eliason

This presentation will be a brief overview of timber panelization and prefab methods. Learn about high performance assemblies and systems that are finding their way to the Pacific Northwest.

Sage will discuss Hufhaus – a luxury prefab homebuilder in Germany. Hufhaus builds using heavy timber superstructure with cross laminated timber panels and triple glazed window panel infill. A detailed account of one home currently being built on Seattle’s East side will be shown. Sage will discuss this project from many perspectives including: why the owners choose this system; what was involved at the design and engineering levels; and just how energy efficient this construction method is.

Mike will discuss a brief overview of common timber panelization methods in Central Europe. There are several proprietary systems, though the focus will be on cross laminated timber and brettstapel. These wood-based systems provide a number of benefits including significantly reduced construction timelines, carbon sequestration and incorporation of low-grade rapid-growth lumber. Mike worked on a house utilizing brettstapel as thermal storage in Muellheim (DE) and Brute Force Collaborative is presently planning a Cross Laminated Timber house for a Passivhaus development in Western Washington.

Both speakers will show construction details as well as short videos to describe the building techniques, as well as provide candid opinions on the merits of these systems.
