montageTransportation is the single largest source of CO2 emissions in our State.  That’s why using a more sustainable travel option, rather than driving alone in your car, is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint. If you would like to learn more about alternative transportation options, Intercity Transit can help!

Visit the "Go Green" Transit Hub at the Green Tour EcoExpo in downtown Olympian and check out the sustainable transportation options available in Thurston County. You can get information about riding the bus, including free travel training for new riders; find out about vanpool and carpool ridematching services; you can pick up a Thurston County Bicycle Map; sign up for the annual Bicycle Commuter Contest (ride in May); and get a copy of the walking map.

You can also visit their Web site at intercitytransit.com to get more information or to use their online cost calculator to see how much money and emissions you can save using public transportation!

Every Day is Earth Day

The drive towards sustainability grows every day as climate change, energy independence, resource conservation and quality of life issues gain traction in the public and political arenas. Public Transit agencies – and many other organizations – are taking a leadership role in shaping community livability, supporting healthy lifestyle choices, and improving transportation efficiency.  At Intercity Transit, every day is Earth Day.

In the near future, Intercity Transit will make capital investments in sustainable facilities that will serve the residents and commuters of Thurston County for many years to come. This includes a LEED-certified expansion of the downtown Olympia Transit Center, one of the primary multi-modal centers in Thurston County (scheduled for completion in 2013) and a much-needed park and ride lot currently being built on a portion of the former Thurston County landfill, located adjacent to I-5 (scheduled for completion in 2012).

Last year, Intercity Transit began operating the first hybrid-biodiesel-electric buses in the South Puget Sound. The buses replace some of the oldest buses in the fleet and are performing well using about 23 percent less fuel than regular, diesel-fueled coaches. Olympian Editorial, 8/18/10

In addition to the earth-friendly initiatives above, Intercity Transit was one of the charter members of the American Public Transportation Association’s Sustainability Commitment. This means they agree to commit to a core set of actions that model continuous improvement in environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
