Speakers for the Vision2Action Symposium Series, #1: 2012 State Energy Strategy

is the program manager for Washington's State Energy Strategy, at the Washington State Department of Commerce.  Prior to beginning at the Department of Commerce, he provided energy and climate policy analysis as a Senior Scientist at the Stockholm Environment Institute and as an independent consultant.  Clients included the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Washington State Attorney General's office, the City of Seattle, King County, the University of Washington and many others.  Special areas of focus have included greenhouse gas inventories, greenhouse gas regulation, climate science, life-cycle analyses of fuel choices, and fates of nuclear waste.  Mr. Hammerschlag earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988, and a Master of Public Administration at the University of Washington in 2007, as a fellow of the Program on Climate Change.

has spent a quarter-century devoted to working on Washington’s energy and transportation issues. As director of WSDOT’s Public Transportation Division he oversees the agency’s programs and initiatives dedicated to sustainable transportation, commute trip reduction (CTR), telework, regional and rural mobility, special needs transportation, construction traffic mitigation, intercity connectivity and many others. Along with other leaders across the state, he represented WSDOT in the effort to develop the State Energy Strategy, a range of methods and solutions for our state’s economic growth, jobs and climate change. Brian also represents WSDOT as chair of the Governor-appointed CTR Board, which implements statewide policies that relieve congestion in our state’s urban centers; and vice chair of the Agency Council on Coordinated Transportation (ACCT), which supports the state’s mission of improving mobility and connectivity in rural areas and for citizens with special needs.

Luke Howard is a Building Science Specialist with the Washington State University (WSU) Energy Program. With a decade of academic and professional experience researching, analyzing and implementing sustainable and resource conserving building design strategies, Luke educates industry professionals and the public about resource and energy conservation practices.
