Annual Members' Retreat > Deep Green
Annual Members' Retreat 2008
October 17-19
Register now! This year’s Retreat promises to be great! Join us at Pilgrim Firs Conference Center near Port Orchard, Washington for a weekend full of fun, learning, and camaraderie! We’ve put together another great program:
- Our Saturday Keynote speaker is Meror Krayenhoff an environmental builder for thirty years and the inventor and principal of SIREWALL, and insulated rammed earth system. Meror’s talk Greenbuilding – Vision and Current Reality will explore what's going on behind green building – what’s driving the action and what technologies are available to us.
- Our Sunday Keynote speaker is Ray Levesque, a community development strategist focusing on Native American communities and the director of the SuKadem Development on the Lummi Reservation. In his talk, Green Dreams in the Red World, Ray will discuss some of the issues that inform decision-making for tribal home development, as well as the effects of green on neighborhoods.
- Getting Green: Connecting Planning, Low Impact Development, and Housing
Tom Campbell, Senior Associate with America Speaks, will discuss the drafting of Washington’s 'growth management act,’ different policy goals, and how they play out at the design level. Citizen participation is an important component of his work. He is working on the New Orleans Rebuilding Plan and helping to develop the design criteria for the World Trade Center.
He will share his experiences with design choices and the permitting of Clearwater Commons, a low impact development. Tom will also cover the ecosystem challenges of creating “scale” in low impact developments.
- Living Building House at Felida Communities
Brandon Tauscher, with Project Green Build, is developing the Felida Living House, which will serve as an educational classroom helping the building industry, code officials, and the general public understand the systems, cost, and performance of a Living Building.
- Early Adopters – Moving Ourselves and Our Networks to the Next Level
Jon Alexander, president of Sunshine Construction and one of the founders of the NW EcoBuilding Guild, will host a highly participatory workshop designed to support break-through thinking and collective action to take advantage of the opportunity to expand the growth of green building in a powerful and sustainable way.
- NW Solar: Carbon Free, Nuclear Free
Chris Herman is a Certified Professional Building Designer with Winter Sun Design, as well as a founding member of the NWEBG and a founding board member of Solar Washington. He will bring us up to date on incorporating solar into our projects and give us a summary of the recently developed Carbon Free/Nuclear Free Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy.
- Marketing Your Deep Green Project
Joanie Parsons, president and chief strategic advisor of Parsons Public Relations, will provide creative strategies for grabbing the media’s interest and how to effectively communicate your commitment to sustainability when marketing your green building.
- Wholistic Engineering for Living Building Water Systems
Mark Buehrer, founder of 2020 Engineering, will discuss how a Living Building Water System mimics nature and, by doing so, is based on “closed-loop” design that integrates the reuse of water and nutrients to provide on-site solutions with both economical and environmental benefits.
We’ll also have:
- A Retreat Silent Auction
- Our Annual Slideshow of Member Projects
- And Much, much More!
This year’s Retreat if dedicated to the memory of Architect Chris Stafford, long time Guild President and important influence on straw bale and green building.
Online Registration has started! Early Registration is $235 per person and the deadline is September 8th. Regular Registrations are due by October 6th and are $260 per person. After October 6th the registration is $285 per person.
If you were at last year’s Retreat, you already know how valuable it was - and how inspiring. If you weren’t, ask other Guild members who were there. Or, better yet, come find out for yourself this year!
Call for Auction Items
As in previous years, we will have a great Silent Auction at the Retreat. The Auction is one of our few annual fund-raising efforts, and it’s really fun! Please help us make 2008’s Auction the best ever.
Pull out the stops and BRING, or SEND, your Auction items to Pilgrim Firs
and support the Guild. Call on your friends, family and business contacts to donate interesting and highly desirable items that will bring Billions to the Guild.
In the past we've had everything from guided kayak trips & hikes to wine, books relating to green building or design, hand-painted shirts, jewelry, tools, art work... And don’t be afraid to bid on your own item(s)! It’s a Donation, remember.
REMEMBER: YOUR DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
- Can’t make it to the Retreat but have an item to donate? Contact us. We’ll arrange to have someone pick it up.
- Want to donate a service? Need a Certificate? Provide us with the information and we’ll produce one.
We also have a
Silent Auction Item Donation Form that you can use.
See you there,
Your NWEBG Retreat Committee
