The Northwest Idea House of the Year not only serves as a personal residence and light commercial space, but also functions as a demonstration and education site. The underlying theme throughout the home/office design, systems considerations, diversity of building method implementations, and materials selection became known as the "Green Meets the Greenback Criteria" where every decision was made with a careful analysis on the return on investment as well as on the environmental impact.

Sockeye Ideahouse Exterior

This Northwest contemporary style home/office, showcases a Japanese flare harmonizing concrete, steel and engineered wood elements all while achieving deep "Green" using the most advanced systems and technologies available. The space features three different building methods, each implemented for optimal performance, including Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) for below grade spaces, Advanced Framing 24" on Center for above grade walls and Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the roof.

A Daikin air-to-water heat pump system provides radiant heat, forced air heat, air conditioning and domestic hot water all in one unit using 10-27 amps for the entire 7,000 sq ft residential and commercial space. Once connected to the future solar panel installation the hot water and heating/cooling for the entire space will be self-sustaining.

A unique outdoor water feature doubles as a water cistern for collecting rainwater roof run-off and for holding gray water from the infinity style tub located in the Japanese hot springs spa area of the home. This water is used to irrigate the on-site food production sites and is set up to cool the future solar panel installation.

The interior finishes of the home feature the latest in recycled and healthy home products. Exposed Parallam beams and SIPS in the central wing of the home provide structural strength with high insulation value but also save trees by utilizing scrap and recycled wood composites. The hydronic radiant floor heating is covered by 1-1/2" Gypcrete and a 1/4 wear top layer providing a sleek concrete style floor that warms the space without the use of fossil fuel. Exposed cable/monorail lighting, spiral duct with vents for hydronic cooling system and fire-sprinkler pipe provide an industrial stainless element that compliments the custom designed TV wall featuring 14 speaker multi-zone sound system.

The Nana Wall accordion style door opens 23' to provide an incredible indoor/outdoor entertaining space. With a motorized awning running on tracks over the deck's trellis system, the outdoor space can be utilized rain or shine! On-site food production and farming are part of the master landscape design plan including drought tolerant and climate appropriate plants. Limited turf grass and extensive use of native vegetation are encompassed on the multi-phased design.
