The RE Store is your nonprofit building salvage company in Ballard. We take materials donations, we do free salvage pick-ups, we do green demolition – and then we sell all of that material in our store, at roughly half the cost of what it would be new. Many of the homes on the tour today bought materials for their projects from our store - come check our vast array of building materials we have for your projects as well – everything from lumber and flooring to doors and windows to plumbing fixtures and hardware.

The RE Store was founded in 1993 by the non-profit organization RE Sources for Sustainable Communities to address the growing problem of wasteful disposal of useable building materials, most of which were buried in the local landfill. Roughly 60% of all landfill debris is from the construction and demolition industry – much of this is perfectly useable material! The organization was able to focus on the mission of saving waste by forming The RE Store under the non-profit umbrella, supporting the public's growing interest in green building and reuse.

The RE Store now provides a practical alternative to dumping building materials. In 2012, our efforts saved a total of 5,503,000 pounds or 2,751.5 tons of building supplies - the equivalent weight of 6 Boeing 747s or 71 semi-trailers.

By comparison, 200,000 buildings are demolished each year in the United States. The demolition of a modest 2,000 square foot house generates up to 127 tons of trash. The RE Store can reuse up to 50% of that material and recycle another 49%, leaving a mere 1% to end up in a landfill or incinerator.

The RE Store takes donations at the store everyday, and sends a full-time field crew out to pick up and salvage materials as a free service.  We also do green demolition.  All of those materials are sold in our store, typically set at a price of about ½ of what it would cost new, saving homeowners and builders money, while providing materials that can be of better quality do to its age and craftsmanship.

We also create affordable, quality furniture made from reclaimed materials in our REvision Division, curate an annual Recycled Arts Show, and have a variety of workshops related to salvage DIY home and craft projects.

For more information about any of our efforts, and to get salvage inspiration, please check us out on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube – all of which can be linked to from our website: www.re-store.org
