ShelterKraft Werks, Inc.
The CargoCottage™ is a compact home built from a reclaimed steel shipping container, using eco-friendly building materials and fixtures. ShelterKraft designs and builds container homes and commercial structures that are sustainable, durable, space-efficient, and affordable, using green building products (e.g., recycled-material countertops, water-saving toilets, and zero-VOC paints).
ShelterKraft designs and builds innovative houses and structures using repurposed steel cargo containers. Containers can provide a strong and durable, widely available, cost-effective, and sustainable option for building construction, once their shipping life has ended.
We fabricate the houses in modules at our facility in Ballard and then they are transported to the home owner’s site for installation. We can also integrate green technologies like solar and wind power, greywater reclaimation, green roofs, composting toilets and other off-the-grid options. The CargoCottage and other ShelterKraft container homes are perfect for a backyard office or dwelling, cabin in the wilderness, or a primary family residence.
- A set of stock cargo container house/studio designs that customers can order, with some modifications and options available.
- Fully custom-designed houses using single or multiple containers, side-by-side, stacked, or whatever you can imagine!
- Multi-unit dwellings such as apartment buildings, dormitories, and bunkhouses.
- Additionally, we are developing do-it-yourself (DIY) packages for for those customers who prefer to do some or all of the construction and finishing
ShelterKraft houses provide advantages to the environment in multiple ways. First, through our reuse of the surplus shipping containers themselves - because they are made from a steel alloy containers are less likely to be recycled than other steel items. Our stock house and backyard office models are small footprint spaces (ranging from 160-640 square feet) that are highly energy-efficient to power and heat. On-demand water heaters, recycled material countertops, soy-based insulation, low-VOC finishes, and dual-flush water saving toilets are all standard. Additionally, customers can select from a range of options such as solar power, green roofs, sustainable/locally-harvested woods, graywater reclamation, composting toilets, etc. We can design to LEED standards for any project.
